The empire is steady. The ledgers are balanced. But Lord Henry Kingston is about to lose control.
For six years, the Earl of Derby has been the architect of his own unassailable reputation. Summoned for duty, he prepares to return to London — ready to manage his estates, appease his patrons, and maintain the impeccable order of the Kingston legacy.
Enter Lord Tristan Kingston: the brother Lord Henry can neither control nor predict. Irreverent and dangerously charming, Lord Tristan is a master of provocation, determined to rattle Lord Henry’s restraint at every turn. When Lord Henry decides to debut a controversial collection of hidden Renaissance paintings, he doesn't just spark a scandal — he ignites a firestorm.
The exhibition sets off a chain of events that transforms a quiet season of duty into the calm before a devastating storm. While Lord Henry remains anchored by discipline and decorum, the first shadows of an inevitable unraveling begin to stir beneath the surface of his carefully constructed world.
This is the story of the man before the myth. Discover the first tremors of a scandal that will echo into The Grünewald Affair (Book 1) — and the moment Lord Henry realizes that no amount of calculation can protect a heart from the one woman he never saw coming.

What a brilliant way to set the stage!
This short prequel is loaded with witty dialogue and amazing tension between the two Kingston brothers. Lord Henry is the ultimate brooding, duty-bound hero... His brother... is pure chaotic fun. Leaves you desperately needing to know what happens in the next book.
Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this prequel to The Grünewald Affair! Quiet Defiance gave me a whole new appreciation for Lord Henry and Lord Tristan — seeing where their story began makes the events of the main book even better!

This was an excellent reading experience... the sibling banter shows the bond between the brothers is strong.
The prose is sharp, the pacing is excellent. There is clear promise of an exciting introduction to the heroine in the next book.
I really love this author's writing style. You won't be disappointed.

The beautiful language draws the reader right into the room.... The artwork described is phenomenal. I even looked up the artist, Matthias Grünewald—the research and descriptions are so immersive that I wanted to see the art for myself.

I loved the interaction between the brothers!... The contrast between Henry, so serious and responsible, and his younger brother Tristan, who is bent on enjoying life, is wonderful. The legacy of the Grünewald paintings adds such a rich layer to the story.
